Henry Cavill is your new Superman!

I know this big game is a week away, but today is the REAL ‘Super Sunday’. Rarely – and I mean very rarely – does news of this magnitude get released on a Sunday afternoon, but Warner Bros. was feeling froggy today.

Henry Cavill, best known for his work as Charles Brandon in Showtime’s The Tudor’s, has officially been cast as Superman in the upcoming Superman movie reboot, according to Warner Bros and director Zack Snyder. Cavill’s name has come up in Superman talks for the last few weeks but I don’t know if anyone looked at him as a legitimate threat to snag the role. In reality, we should have seen it coming. This will mark the third time a relative unknown has been cast as ‘The Man of Steel’ on the big screen. Both Christopher Reeve and Brandon Routh were anything but stars when they were given the honor of donning the cape. Now, Cavill will get an opportunity to elevate his career dramatically. Zack Snyder had some nice words for his new star:

“In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”

Personally, I was pulling for a Brandon Routh return for this one, but seeing as how it was being billed as a “reboot” and with a new director and producer (Christopher Nolan), it was pretty clear early on that he would not be returning. We’ll have to wait and see how everything comes together.
